Government agencies may no longer lower a driver's credit score over unpaid traffic ticket fines, court costs or parking citations, under rules approved last week.

The three major credit reporting agencies, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion agreed to the new policy in a legal settlement with thirty-one state attorneys general last year.

The credit bureaus will eliminate reporting debts that did not arise from a contract or agreement by the consumer to pay as of June 15, 2016, such as tickets or fines, including but not limited to: towing charges, vehicle storage fees, parking and traffic tickets/fines, toll road fines/fees.

"If you did not sign a contract for the debt, you cannot be reported to the credit bureau", says driver's attorney Albert Quirantes of Miami Florida.

"Those having these negative items on their credit reports prior to June 15, 2016 may also file a challenge with the credit bureau and they will remove these items as negative entries", informs the lawyer.

This is a big victory for drivers and consumers alike!
